5 Data-Driven Strategies to Improve Investor Communications

Written by The Notified Team | Jun 17, 2025 5:21:32 PM

In our recent webinar, investor relations experts Erik Carlson, CEO at Notified, Glenn Schulman, Founder of Z3 Biocommunications, and Amanda Tang, Head of Investor Relations at TMX Group, shared practical, data-driven ways to strengthen your IR strategy and build long-term investor confidence.

Whether you're new to using IR metrics or ready to optimize your approach, these five data tips will help you make smarter decisions, faster.

Pro Tip: Tools like Notified’s IR Hub are making it easier to act on insights by bringing your IR website, events, press releases and analytics into one connected dashboard.

5 Data-Driven Investor Relations Strategies

1. Start By Auditing Your IR Metrics

Before improving your strategy, understand what you’re already tracking and what’s missing.

As Carlson explained in our webinar:

“Pause and take index of what you’re measuring – and what you’re not. Look at foundational metrics, like event engagement, website traffic, or media monitoring, and start building a baseline.”

This means figuring out:

  • What you’re tracking now: Are you measuring how many people attend your earnings calls? Do you know how much traffic your IR page gets?
  • What you’re not tracking yet: Maybe you haven’t been keeping tabs on who’s watching your investor webcasts or which press releases get the most clicks.

Creating a baseline helps you benchmark performance and uncover what’s actually working. But don’t expect overnight results patterns take time to emerge.

How IR Hub Can Help: With IR Hub, you can consolidate foundational metrics across your website, earnings events and email campaigns so you can monitor trends and refine your messaging all in one place.

2. Focus On Actionable Investor Insights, Not Just Numbers

Big numbers don’t always equal big impact. The most useful data is the kind that leads to better decisions.

Tang said it best:

“The value is not in the quantity of the data, but in our ability to digest, interpret, and derive actionable insights from it.”

Ask:

  • Who’s attending your earnings calls and are they engaged?
  • Are specific investor segments growing or declining?
  • Which messaging points are getting the most attention?

Less is more when you’re focused on the insights that move the needle.

3. Don't Overlook Underused Data Sources

Some of the best insights come from places IR teams often forget to check.

One of the biggest mistakes IR teams make is overlooking data that’s right in front of them. During the webinar, Schulman shared a great example:

“Something as simple as monitoring call lists, seeing who is on your webcast, who is on your live IR event who is actively engaging with your story is incredibly valuable.”

Look beyond the basics:

  • Webcast attendance shows you who’s curious about your company story.
  • Website analytics reveal which investor pages or documents are getting the most views.
  • Event interactions tell you who’s truly paying attention.

4. Use AI Tools to Work Smarter, Not Harder

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how IR teams approach data but it’s not replacing human strategy. It’s enhancing it.

As Carlson pointed out, it’s important to strike the right balance between automation and human judgment.

“IR teams aren’t necessarily growing, but responsibilities and data are – so it’s key to combine technology with human insights to stay ahead,“ he said.

“Many IR teams are small, and we can’t just expand overnight,” said Tang. “But with the power of AI, it can feel like you’re a team of more than one or two. AI helps you do more with less – whether that’s tracking trends, improving engagement, or saving time on repetitive tasks.”

Here’s how you can use AI to make your life easier:

  • Automate repetitive tasks like media monitoring and benchmarking.
  • Spot hidden patterns in investor behavior.
  • Predict engagement trends to inform messaging strategies.

At Notified, we’re building IRIS an AI-powered assistant coming soon to our IR Hub platform. IRIS will help teams work smarter by mining transcripts, analyzing Q&A and creating analyst profiles. It’s designed to cut down manual research and deliver meaningful insights faster.

5. Keep Investor Engagement Going After the Meeting

Great investor communication doesn’t stop when the earnings call ends. Use your data to keep the conversation going.

Tips to stay connected:

  • Follow up with investors who downloaded key materials (like ESG reports). “Don’t let high-quality meetings go stale. Set up meetings strategically – whether before or after the quarter – while keeping blackout periods and feedback in mind to stay visible and maintain momentum,” said Schulman.
  • Reconnect with inactive stakeholders who’ve gone quiet.
  • Personalize outreach based on previous engagement history.
